Mathematical Habits of Mind: Why Thinking Like a Mathematician is Important

Mathematical Habits of Mind (MHoM) are specialized ways of approaching mathematical problems and thinking about mathematical concepts that resemble the ways employed by mathematicians. Students with strong MHoM are able to persevere, recognize that there are multiple ways to solve a problem, demonstrate respect for diversity in approaches to solving problems, choose and use appropriate strategies and tools, and pursue accuracy in problem solving. These habits help students understand math, solve problems, and even create new mathematics. To encourage the development of MHoM in students, we can promote a growth mindset, engage students in problem-based learning, encourage students to collaborate and discuss, and provide opportunities for students to create and explore. By fostering MHoM in our students, we can help them become more confident and proficient in math and better equipped to apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of contexts.
